There could be several different reasons for this. It would be worth starting with removing any unused programs or data. Run all the maintenance programs as per 'What regular maintenance should I do?'. If this does not help on Windows XP there is something called system restore, this restores your computer to as it was on certain date in the past but you do not lose any work you have done in the mean time. This can be found under start button, all programs, accessories, system tools.
Open up your anti-virus program, update it and then run a full system scan. If you do not have any anti-virus software get some then follow these steps.
On Windows XP you should regularly run disk defragmenter, disk clean-up, spyware and virus checks. (Disk defragmenter and disk clean-up can be found under start button, all programs, accessories, system tools.) These utilities should be run about once a month.
If you have a wireless router, take the power lead out and then put it back in. If you have a broadband modem check or phone your ISP's latest information.
